Capri by Fraser Berlin

JOI-Design GmbH

For Capri by Fraser on Berlin's Spree Island, JOI-Design's brief was to celebrate the remarkable heritage of the 145 keys hotel which excavation works from 2007-09 revealed to be the very heart of where modern-day Berlin was first established. The design also needed to reflect the DNA of Capri as a fun, young-spirited, surprising and colourful brand, whilst playfully interpreting the city's history in a friendly, interactive manner.

The creation of the design concept "layers of history" was inspired by the property's fascinating location at Petriplatz city square. Integrated with a museum and church for a new, one-of-a-kind destination, this contemporary long-stay apartment hotel encourages fun whilst learning about the city's birthplace.

In the lobby of this buzzy urban hub, a perforated golden hexagon installation lays over a black and white etching of the island's ancient structures. Combining the old with the new, this innovative use of materials is designed as a metaphor for the value of past civilisations that can still be glimpsed today. Vibrant, freestanding furniture allows for flexible configuration atop a tempered glass floor as an "immersion" into the archaeological dig below revealing Berlin's original foundations. This format encourages interaction between guests offering truly unique "instagrammable moments" and attracting very contemporary awareness for the hotel.

Warm orange and pink tones bring a sense of wellbeing to the comfortable, modern guestrooms. Berlin's heritage is referenced throughout, including a map of ancient Petriplatz on the wall and abstract rug.

Inspired by its Asian cuisine and food paired with dipping sauces, Caprilicious restaurant's motto "dip into history" also flavoured its interior design. The entire restaurant appears dip-dyed in orange, including the art, furniture, walls and three-dimensional letters spelling out HISTORY, tone on tone, only visible at second glance.

The overlaying of different patterns is designed to play with diverse ages of history throughout the hotel and multicoloured strings hung in doorways allude to the graphic depiction of timelines. A zigzag of pendant lights also conveys the charting of the past. Being aware of using sustainable elements the designers chose high-value, durable furniture pieces. The seamless integration and showcasing of the archaeological excavations celebrates sustainability in action.

Playful accessories and a sunny palette infuse the Capri by Fraser Berlin with positivity, joy, curiosity and empowerment. Created in the spirit of fun and completed in Summer 2017, JOI-Design's light-hearted concept instils comfort, the freedom to feel inspired and the passion to learn.
