Kimpton Banneker Hotel

Mason Studio

Located in the heart of Washington DC in the Dupont Circle neighbourhood, the Kimpton Banneker Hotel comprises two distinct restaurants, 144 suites, meeting rooms and fitness facilities.

Our design approach considers the unique characteristics that make up a city to provide a hotel experience that celebrates local art and culture to create a sense of place. The interior design communicates a narrative of Washington’s history, monumental architecture and contemporary culture to offer a guest experience that is both reflective and yet a unique interpretation of the city. The overarching expression is a design that is sophisticated minimalism. As a renovation project, the building’s history as a former hotel and apartment complex factored into our design. Working within the constraints of existing demising walls and plumbing, we took advantage of the former apartment compositions to create more generous guestrooms with a-typical layouts. For the hotel, ground floor restaurant and rooftop bar, we created distinct concepts for each space referencing the dynamic architecture and neighbourhood variations found within the city. Our goal was to capture the character of Washington DC in key areas of the design to amplify guests’ perception of the city while focusing our budgets in strategic ways.
