MORPH is a mixed-use space with a total construction area of 1,000 sqm. With an urban park and Houhai business circle nearby.”MORPH” means transformation and evolution in Chinese. The client hopes to build a vigorous and brand new social space, to introduce and hold various cultural, artistic and musical events, with a view to bringing new vitality to the city.
The most difficult parts of the project lie in the balanced utilization of materials（Chinese five elements：Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth), structural extension to the space and creation of unique visual impressions. As pondering the concept of “Evolution of design”, the greatest challenge posed to the designers was how to incorporate their thinking into the spatial design and at the same time to combine transformed traditional Chinese elements with modern designs.
In terms of material palette, the designers using sand color and dark to set the overall tone of the space and balance the proportions of other high-saturation colors and utilize some traditional and local materials to collide with the modern interior structural forms, and fuse gradually-forgotten Chinese old elements with international modern designs and aesthetics in an innovative manner, thereby presenting the "evolution" of design.
