The Luna

Make Architects

The Luna at 18 Lun Fat Street in Wan Chai is a new 29-storey residential tower from Make Architects for client Vanke HK that sets a new standard for serviced apartments in Hong Kong. The 105 high-end apartments - including a top-floor luxury penthouse and four larger two-bed apartments at the upper levels - have all been designed with an exceptionally high level of consideration and detail. This is because serviced apartments require a significant amount of extra design work compared to regular residential units.

With space at such a premium in Hong Kong, we redesigned the arrangement of the apartments so that they now wrap around the west and north elevations in an L-shaped plan that grants residents double, and even triple-aspect, views to the mountain and Victoria Harbour.

The internal layout of the apartments themselves has also been carefully planned to create a greater sense of openness and generosity, as well as logical journey into the home. Residents enter either a foyer or kitchen-dining area, then move to the living area and lastly, the bedroom. Bedrooms and living areas enjoy plentiful daylight and incredible views from full-height windows, and access to a balcony or, in the case of the one-bedroom apartments, two.

The balconies' perforated cladding creates ever-changing patterns of light and shadow, which Make has translated into a light-and-dark interior palette. Mid-brown oak flooring flows throughout, and dark, engineered 'Oak Noir' joinery is offset by pale walls and furniture, pale stone in the kitchen and bathrooms, and champagne bronze fixtures such as lampshades and handles.

Make custom-designed the joinery, creating as many features as possible that would maximise space and create a sense of luxury. For instance, bedside tables are integrated into the headboard and incorporate plug sockets, charger points and lights within their brown marble tops. One-bed corner apartments include walk-in wardrobes and sliding doors between the sleeping and living space.

The bathrooms are well-lit and have a rain shower, branded fittings and chrome fixtures. Likewise, kitchens are fully fitted with appliances and kitchenware and have Oak Noir cupboards and white worktops with chrome fixtures. Make also fully styled the apartments, down to flower arrangements and bathroom linens.

Apartment entrance lobbies are dark, with black marble flooring and textured wall paper, whilst the ground floor lobby has Calacatta marble walls, matched with a monochrome flooring pattern that flows through to the residents' clubhouse and outside garden.
