Clinical Learning Simulation Lab
Stantec Architecture Ltd.
Flexible, Transparent Hub for Interdisciplinary Medical Training
A 4,200 sq ft renovation transforms classrooms into flexible exam suites with debrief space, advanced AV observation and movable partitions, optimising interdisciplinary clinical teaching, collaboration and assessment within tight constraints.
Conceived to condense a full simulation suite into 4,200 sq ft, the Clinical Learning Simulation Lab reconfigures three classrooms and an office into a contemporary environment for scenario-based training across medicine, nursing, rehabilitation and pharmacy. The brief called for a setting that supports observation-led teaching, rapid room reconfiguration and rigorous assessment, while still inviting collaboration. Two clusters of exam rooms ring a shared debrief zone and perimeter observation corridors, ensuring learners, clinicians and patients can move fluidly between practice, review and iteration.
Eight compact exam rooms can be paired into four larger suites via movable acoustic partitions, with each space recorded by high-fidelity cameras for live monitoring and instant playback from a dedicated control room. A reception, green room and ample storage streamline operations for staff and volunteers. The clear circulation, abundant borrowed daylight and a restrained palette of white, black and timber accents reinforce legibility and calm under pressure, aligning the interior with the pedagogical focus on communication, reflection and team-based care.
Judges highlighted the project’s efficient spatial strategy and technology-enabled flexibility, noting its clarity and sense of order. They also suggested increasing debrief capacity, bolstering acoustic absorption and softening the dominance of black finishes. Overall, it sets a robust benchmark for adaptable clinical education interiors.
The judges said: “Through rational spatial planning and sophisticated circulation design, this educational interior creates a unique immersive atmosphere that exudes a restrained yet powerful sense of serenity and structural order.”
