BDP Lighting

Warm, sensitive lighting revitalises a Grade II treasure.

BDP Lighting orchestrated an innovative wireless-controlled scheme that accentuates ornate tiles and columns while protecting heritage fabric with discreet infrastructure and sensitive integration of modern systems.

BDP Lighting reimagined a Grade II listed Victorian hall into a contemporary dining destination, with the objective of a warm, atmospheric and functional environment for more than 200 covers. The challenge was twofold: celebrate ornate tiles, columns and vaulted soffits while safeguarding heritage fabric, and incorporating live music infrastructure as well as safety considerations seamlessly. The team also aimed to transition the mood from day to evening, maintaining comfort and visual coherence.

A 2700K lighting palette underpins the scheme, with filament clusters drawing guests through the entrance and central areas, soft uplighting articulating the columns, and concealed sources modelling surfaces without glare. Unable to mount to the interior envelope, the designers engineered suspended rafts to illuminate the listed soffits while minimising penetrations. These rafts discreetly house PAVA, sensors, WAP and emergency lighting, and provide three-compartment containment to route power and data. Casambi wireless controls give operators scene-setting and adaptability via app.

Judges praised the sensitivity: as Emma Holt noted, "The lighting design demonstrates a thoughtful sensitivity to the existing ornate interiors." Others admired the warm, inviting ambiance and emphasis on heritage detail. Overall, the scheme elevates the grandeur of the Egyptian Room, enriches visitor experience and preserves the dignity of its fabric, offering a credible template for lighting complex historic interiors.

The judges said: “this space would not be what it is without the lighting, it feels warm, inviting and memorable”
