Huishan Ancestral Hall Museum

Beijing PRO Lighting Design Co

Client: Wuxi Nianhua Bay Cultural Investment Development Co., Ltd.

Huishan Ancestral Hall Museum is a renovation of a Grade I protected historic timber-framed building in Wuxi, China, reimagined as a public museum celebrating local cultural and industrial heritage. The client brief required a lighting scheme that fully preserves the original fabric of the ancestral hall, enhances the display of archives and artifacts, and creates a warm, inclusive atmosphere for community use.

The project scope covers multiple exhibition halls, courtyards, and communal spaces, all housed within the protected heritage structure.

Key design elements include a layered lighting strategy: warm 2700K–3000K ambient light maintains the hall’s solemn character, while high-CRI spotlights and wall washers highlight architectural details, exhibits, and timber textures without glare or UV damage.

A custom intelligent lighting control system enables scene switching between daytime exhibition modes and evening public event modes, ensuring flexibility for diverse uses.

Construction adopted a non-intrusive approach, using ultra-lightweight, low-profile fixtures with no structural modification to the historic building.

Sustainability features include low-UV LED sources, energy-efficient dimming controls, and long-lasting, recyclable materials to minimize the project’s environmental impact and preserve the heritage fabric long-term.

A standout innovation is the “Gate of Light” curved luminous installation, which uses modern light language to dissolve outdated perceptions of ancestral halls, creating a striking yet respectful dialogue between tradition and contemporary design. The scheme balances heritage protection with public accessibility, proving that lighting can transform a protected site into a vibrant, welcoming cultural space for the community.
