Moonlit Currents (Yue Man Da Jiang)

Client: YUE MAN DA JIANG

Yue Man Da Jiang is a contemporary hotpot restaurant in Chengdu designed for a younger urban audience seeking immersive and socially driven dining experiences. The project reinterprets the collective atmosphere of Sichuan hotpot culture through a spatial language centred on gathering, movement, and sensory intensity.

The interior is organised around a looping circulation system that establishes clear spatial flow while encouraging interaction throughout the restaurant. At the centre of the plan, a shared dining core supports intuitive navigation and efficient restaurant operations during peak hours. Around this core, enclosed seating clusters create varying degrees of intimacy while reinforcing the communal nature of hotpot dining.

A bold red palette, layered materials and immersive lighting conditions define the visual identity of the space. Inspired by the layered texture of omasum tripe, a signature lighting installation introduces a continuous spatial rhythm and becomes a memorable brand element throughout the interior. Together with ambient loop lighting, the lighting system strengthens orientation, atmosphere, and visual continuity.

Material selection balances atmosphere with durability for high-frequency commercial use. Custom furniture incorporates traditional Sichuan bamboo weaving techniques, reinterpreting local craft traditions within a contemporary dining environment. Layered materials, reflective finishes, and controlled lighting conditions work together to create an immersive yet operationally efficient spatial experience.

The project demonstrates an integrated approach to branding, circulation, and dining experience design. Rather than relying on decorative symbolism, the interior translates the energy of Chengdu’s hotpot culture into a cohesive spatial system shaped by rhythm, density, and collective interaction.
