Palazzo in Florence

Stef Albert Studios

The restoration and modernisation of this palazzo in the heart of Florence, overlooking the River Arno, was guided by a simple principle: to respect the historic character of the property while allowing it to feel fresh, personal and entirely suited to contemporary life.

The original proportions and architectural sequence of the rooms provided the framework for the design. These historic qualities were renewed through the restoration of existing decorative elements, the creation of bespoke wall murals and frescoes, and the introduction of newly designed parquet floors informed by traditional Florentine craftsmanship.

Rather than treating the residence as a period reconstruction, the interiors deliberately juxtapose old and new. Contemporary paintings and sculpture sit within rooms of classical scale, creating tension, energy and a sense of continuity between different eras. Bespoke furniture, lighting and decorative elements were designed to complement the architecture without imitating it.

Comfort was as important as visual impact. Formal reception rooms retain their grandeur and sense of occasion, but the furniture arrangements remain welcoming and practical. Seating was selected and designed for genuine comfort, while natural fibres and fabrics of the highest quality bring softness, texture and warmth to the rooms. Private spaces are quieter and more intimate, while remaining connected to the overall decorative language of the palazzo.

Colour, proportion, craftsmanship and natural light were carefully considered throughout. Specialist artisans contributed to the restoration work, painted decoration, joinery, flooring and bespoke fabrication, ensuring that every new intervention felt integral to the residence.

Existing architectural elements were preserved and repaired wherever possible, while durable materials, traditional techniques and individually made furnishings were chosen for their longevity.

The completed residence brings the historic palazzo into the present without diminishing its past. Florentine architecture, bespoke craftsmanship, contemporary art and comfortable modern living coexist within a layered and highly personal interior.
